Part Two of The Object Lag brings together artists and designers converging on the topic of translation, developing an array of contributions. The Object Lag, Translation aims to highlight fractures and incongruities in the transformation of ideas, objects, language, definitions, history and contexts while considering ‘misunderstanding’ as inevitable and positive space for discussion, imagination and knowledge production.

Nieuwe Vide proudly presents Michael Beck and Jean-Baptiste Maitre at de kunstvlaai with their projects developed in part one of The Object Lag, Form & Content. Graphic designer Beck documents and provides a live window into The Object Lag at Nieuwe Vide with his work Like Russian Dolls. Maitre’s ongoing project Film De Jour is presented both in De Kunstvlaai and at Nieuwe Vide in various stages of development.

Haarhandel - Jeroen Marttin & Vittoria Soddu from Negotiating Equity

19:00 - 22:00 Nieuwe Vide, Minckelersweg 6 Haarlem

19:00 - UK based hair & make-up and prosthetics artist, Ginny Baker Demonstrates the transformation of hair from one person to another.
19:30 - Screening of the documentary Hair India (2008) by Raffaele Brunetti and Marco Leopardi (ca. 75 mins)
20:45 - Discussion on the ethics of the hair trade route between India and Europe, through which hair is donated for religious reasons ending up as hair extensions, wigs and moustaches in the fashion world.

Haarhandel marks the first in a series of events hosted by students of the Dutch Art institute as a two-month collaboration between The Object Lag and Negotiating Equity. The platform organized by Renee Ridgway aims to offer a participatory platform to address the ethics and practice of curatorship as a mode of art production.

Planting Words – Foundland & Kostas Tzimoulis from Negotiating Equity

15.00 -19:00 Nieuwe Vide, Minckelersweg 6, Haarlem

Planting Words is a gardening ceremony organized by Foundland and Kostas Tzimoulis who invite the neighboring community of Nieuwe Vide to plant a garden. Planting Words is a continuation of the project, “Sunshine is the best disinfectant’’, a campaign against racist and radical right wing quotes used by Dutch politicians. Participants will be warmly welcomed at 15:00 with refreshments. Simultaneously, Kostas Tzimoulis will screen his video work on translation in the multicultural context of Greek schools.

In an accumulation of activity, The Object Lag, Translation concludes with a Transition Week.Starting with De Stripdagen and ending with a festive Transition Evening, the week functions as a meeting ground for participants and visitors of The Object Lag as it shifts fromTranslation intoThe Archeology of Autonomy. In this open process artists and designers will continue to develop their work and use the week as they see fit.

Frederik Gruyaerts and Anna Hoetjes present a video in which they show the run up towards a project for the Nieuwe Vide in the context of their Negotiating Equity Project at the Dutch Art Institute. The questions that arise in considering the exhibition space, the neighbourhood, the theme, the audience, art education, their own work in general, and the use and joy of art, will be translated into something, but what will that be?

For De stripdagen, the biannual comic book festival in Haarlem, The Object Lag presents, De Kampensche School in dialogue with the East European comic. To mark the collective’s 10th anniversary, special guest Levan Busurashvili is invited to join the group as they develop an ‘Underground Trash Magazine’ exclusively for De Stripdagen, entering a symbiosis of action and reaction between De Kampensche School and a selection of works by East European comic book artists.

The Object Lag, Translation concludes in a festive Transition Evening presenting the works developed by invited artists and designers in an evening of performance and music. The evening will include a performance by Phil Baber 'Mute Objects of Expression' that links to FormContent curatorial project space in London, a performance by Uta Eisenreich and contributions by Rana Hamadeh and Avigail Moss. Additionally, part three of The Object Lag, The Archeology of Autonomy will be introduced. Visitors are warmly welcomed with food and drinks and the evening concludes with a musical performance.
